Gas price discount to save Belarus $2bn a year
2012-01-28
The gas price discount will save Belarus over $2 billion per year, First Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vladimir Semashko said at a solemn reception dedicated to the Day of Belarusian Science on 27 January, BelTA has learnt.

Vladimir Semashko reminded that on 1 January 2012 the energy agreement offering principally new gas supply terms for Belarus came in force. “This is not $340-350 per 1,000 cubic meters, but $165, which will save Belarus over $2 billion a year,” Vladimir Semashko said.

New terms and new forms of oil supplies to Belarus are in effect. “This will make $700 million per year,” the First Vice-Premier said.

These and other things will help reduce and then eliminate the foreign trade deficit. Vladimir Semashko emphasized that last year the foreign trade balance improved by 60% due to the efforts of manufacturers and scientists. “This will help us to reverse the foreign trade deficit, it is our goal,” he said. Belarus should compensate the lack of natural resources by new technologies.

Belarusian scientists are investing a lot of effort into innovations and are exploring new technologies to enhance the competitiveness and prestige of Belarusian products on the international arena, the First Vice Premier emphasized.
